Resume Gaps Can Be Overcome

The simple, hard truth is that the unemployed are discriminated against.  The longer the unemployment, the more difficult it is to receive a job offer or even an interview.  Hiring managers, when pressed, will admit to passing over applicants with gaps on their resumes. The stigma of lengthy unemployment is less damaging during a recession, since it is after all, more ordinary. The average time period for unemployment now stands at 211 days, and higher income earners average longer without work, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . If you don't handle it correctly, it will absolutely count against you. It is imperative that candidates demonstrate that they have been involved in productive and relevant activities during this time. Employers want employees who are enterprising and inventive in the use their time. Volunteering for a community organization, picking up contract or consulting jobs, or taking classes to better your skills are excellent ways to demonstrate

Congratulations, Graduate - Now Get A Job!

The Class of 2011 has graduated and is ready to make its mark on the world. Unfortunately, the diploma they've spent the last several years working so hard for doesn't come with instructions on landing that all important first job. And let's face it - the job market isn't enjoying the big rebound we'd all hoped for by now. So what's a new grad to do? Something is Better than Nothing but Nothing Isn't All Bad Contrary to what some may tell you - experience really does matter. Now, there's a fine line to walk here. Yes, real-world experience in your chosen field will definitely give you the edge over someone who has none. Even if your work experience isn't in your field, you're still going to have a leg up on your competition. But, if you spent all of your time reading and studying and no time in any type of organized work environment, you're going to have to be ready to sell yourself to your potential employer. Selling yourself succe

It's The Little Things That Count

Everyone makes mistakes. Even the most seasoned executive has flubbed a step or two along the job-hunting path yet has still gone on to attain corporate stardom. Why? The truth is: one mistake won't define you. Not even two mistakes. It's the pattern of mistakes that pose a problem. Job seekers, no matter how hard they try, can't quite reach the level of perfection that makes them superhuman. And while it may seem unfair for interviewers to expect this high level of excellence from their potential employee candidates, the fact is: they do. So what's a job seeker to do? Forget the Alamo - remember the little things. Typos, inappropriate comments, late arrivals, follow-ups. It's important to remember that a hiring manager only gets to see a small piece of each person being considered - a sliver of information of which to base a decision on. Arriving late or bombing one interview question may not seem like a big deal to you, but it sends up a red flag for t

What to Expect During Your Inteview

Knowing what to say during the job interview is the golden ticket to the top of the job-hunting pyramid. Whether you stay at the bottom with the other competition or move to the top will depend on how you handle yourself in the interview and how you answer certain questions. Here we take a look at some of the more common questions asked in an interview and the best way to answer them. Remember, it's all about setting yourself apart from the competition. Employers have been around the interview block a time or two and can spot "canned" responses a mile away. Read on and try some of the approaches outlined below as you go through the interview process. Where do you see yourself in five years? This question is one of the most commonly asked in an interview. Employers want to see what types of goals you have set for yourself and your career. If you are interviewing early on in your career, they will be looking at what your ambition level is as well as your drive and d
